Instead of just improving an old concept, a completely new approach has been taken. For years the backing was made of glue or paper. However, glue can melt and paper dissolves when it gets wet.
Dark Matter uses fabric backing which makes it more durable, also making the edges less likely to tear or flake. It also allows using smaller but sharper grains that will not wear over time. This additional sharpness ensures an extremely strong and long lasting grip even when wet. Since the fabric cannot melt, the material is absolutely heat-resistant.
The new 2023 version of dark matter downhill griptape is even coarser while keeping the same flexibility.

How much Dark Matter can one packet cover a longboard?
For a deck 10 inch wide: the squares will cover a 37 inches or 96cm If you use the logo strip in the middle you can cover over 41 inches.
